No matter what rabbit daytime soap operas pull out of their hats these days, the material just doesn't compare to the classic adventures, love, and drama the genre managed to deliver in the 1980s. At least, that's what legions of fans express on social media and soap opera message boards every day. And guess who has tapped into the wave of nostalgia? General Hospital alum John Stamos (ex-Blackie Parrish).
The Full House mega star has partnered with producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron for a cable drama series that chronicles the fame, success, and extreme excess of daytime soaps in the 1980s, reports Deadline.
The untitled series is currently in the early stages of development and is being described as "Boogie Nights in the soap world." Said to be inspired by Stamos's 1982 stint on GH, the drama will "explore the colorful and often dark world of soaps as it follows the journey of a young man thrust into soap stardom, during a decade defined by Reaganomics, greed, excess, indulgence and materialism. As a newly minted teen idol, he will struggle to balance his family life, working at his [father's] restaurant and maintain his humble upbringing while navigating the temptations of sex, drugs and fame."
Stamos is set to executive produce alongside Zadan and Meron through Storyline Entertainment. The trio previously teamed up to produce the Emmy-nominated miniseries Beach Boys: An American Family and the TV movie Martin and Lewis.
At this time, the 80s soap drama still needs a writer. But considering the recent fame of 80s-inspired projects like Netflix's Stranger Things, it shouldn't be too hard to convince a heavy hitter to sign on.
